Glycerin – To Live or Let Die

Glycerin – To Live or Let Die

Let’s get scientific!

Glycerin  is an organic compound composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. It’s a thick, colorless and odorless liquid. It’s water-soluble, sweet to taste and is non-toxic.

The substance occurs naturally in the human body and is used in the synthesis of triacylglycerols and phospholipids. Decomposition of these substances will release the glycerol.

Glycerol is almost synonymous with Glycerin. When you speak about glycerin, it is seen as the liquid. When you speak about the molecule and its properties, then you use the word glycerol.

Benefits of Glycerin

  • It can be used as a cleanser
  • It is a wonderful skin moisturizer
  • It cures oily skin problems like acne and pimples
  • it also gives the skin and hair a soft and supple feel
  • It removes clogged impurities
  • It works like magic in healing your cracked heels overnight

Glycerin for your hair

It’s great to use glycerin based products in moderately moist air. Not too humid, not too dry. When used in the right climactic conditions, glycerin can really help to define your curl pattern
. But when used in the wrong conditions, it can lead to hair damage. Using the pure product can leave your hair and skin feeling sticky.

Luckily, glycerin mixes easily with other water soluble ingredients, so many of us naturalistas like to use it in DIY hair recipes.

I use mine in a homemade spritz. I mix it with water and a few drops of glycerin and natural oils (like jojoba and/or peppermint oil).

Pure glycerin is availabele at most drugstores. My favorite is ” Caro Bright Pure Glycerin” from the brand BSQ  (Black Style Queen). I love, love, love this product for my hair and skin! It makes my curls feel soft and deeply moisturizes my hair for days.

BSQ is also known for her whitening cream. For more info about that one, we recommend our review here on the blog.
